Inspired by the Porsche 356 which was created by Ferry Porsche, and some spyder prototypes built and raced by Walter Glöckler starting in 1951, the factory decided to build a car designed for use in auto racing.[1] The model Porsche 550 Spyder was introduced at the 1953 Paris Auto Show.[2] The 550 was very low to the ground, in order to be efficient for racing. In fact, former German Formula One racer Hans Herrmann drove it under closed railroad crossing gates during the 1954 Mille Miglia.
The 550 / 1500RS or Spyder became known as the "Giant Killer". The later 1956 evolution version of the model, the 550A, which had a lighter and more rigid spaceframe chassis, gave Porsche its first overall win in a major sports car racing event, the 1956 Targa Florio.
Its successor from 1957 onwards, the Porsche 718, was even more successful, scoring points in Formula One as late as 1963. A descendant of the Porsche 550 is generally considered to be the Porsche Boxster S 550 Spyder; the Spyder name was effectively resurrected with the RS Spyder Le Mans Prototype.
The Porsche 550 "Little Bastard", serial number 550-0055 is best known for being the car in which James Dean was killed on September 30, 1955.[3]
[edit] Replicas Technic 550 Spyder, fibreglass panels on custom chassis. Powered by VW Beetle or Alfa engine. The 550 is among the most frequently reproduced classic automobiles, like the AC Cobra and Lotus Seven. Several companies have sprung up in the last 25 years, some of which build near-exact replicas from the ground up, including spaceframes built to exacting specs from Porsche blueprints. Some of the companies that make replicas are Boulder Speedster, Chuck Beck Motorsports, Chamonix do Brasil, Auto Classics, Thunder Ranch, Holmes Motor Company, Le Mans 550 Spyder, Vintage Spyders, and Alloycars, which specializes in exact aluminum re-creations from blueprints.

A Typ1 1600cc, dual carburetors, 4 cylinder boxer mid-motor provides quite enough power for a top speed of 196 km/h combined with a stunning low 7.5 liters per 100 km consumption (unleaded). As the exhaust pipe is very short by design the full sound of the motor can be experienced, also some kind of 'resonance' phenomenon that does sound both nice and loud - unheard of any of the new cars of today. It is very agile due to its low weight of about 500 kg and conforms to the European environment standard E2. The infamous words of James Dean describes the legendry life of the Porsche 550 Spyder – the ‘giant killer’.
My passion lies with the Porsche RS550 with only 90 documented type 550 Spyders built between 27 October 1952 – build No 550-01 and 29 June 1956 – build No 550-0090. Following the RS550 was the production of the 550A which was an evolution of the RS with a birdcage like space frame chassis and modified lighter body shape. By the time the 550A ceased championship racing after the 1958 season, it had not just established itself as a legend, but it had also begun to mould the future of the Porsche marque.
With years of research and the acquisition of my own replica RS550, which is a McRae built Spyder imported from New Zealand to Australia and fully restored to original period detail, I thought it would be a great idea to share my knowledge and experiences with other Spyder fanatics. I see this site as a portal to collect both current and historical information about Spyders.
Every day I find something new about Spyders through a network of talented individuals. There is still an untapped source out there like yourself who might be able to help me find all the pieces to this puzzle such as identifying all 90 original Spyders or expanding on its racing accolades. This site will be continuously updated, so please come back to find something new. Volvo Home The Porsche 550 Spyder In the early 1950's Porsche began to realise that they needed a car that was going to be competitive and well they wanted a car that would be a perfect race car but the 356 just was not powerful enough to be competitive. In 1953 the Porsche 550 was born and this was their first competition car that Porsche had built. What made the 550 so special was that it weighed very little due to the aluminium body and a tubular frame but what's more it was open top. The only team that Porsche were racing against where the Volkswagen team and in their class at the Le Mans they finished first and second in the 1500cc class. Then Porsche had a other win in the famous Pan Americana Mexican road race! The 550's were on a winning streak and because of this Porsche began to dominate the motor racing scene worldwide. The 550 was such a good racing car because it was such a manoeuvrable car but not only that it was quick in fact it was extremely quick and because of that it wiped the floor with the competitors. The Porsche 550 was so popular on the track that it became inevitable that off the track it was popular and boy were they right every single one of this super quick perfect handling cars was sold and it became near impossible to find one that was for sale. Porsche began the production of the 550A in 1956 this was an ever so slightly modified 550 but once again it was a success. The jaw dropping performance of it which shocked the entire world motor racing community by winning its first race in Targa Florio which is a notoriously dangerous road race but to the amazement of the whole motor racing industry it walked over the more powerful rivals like Ferrari and Jaguar. This run of good racing fortune did not stop at its first few races. Over the next 5 years or so it won almost every single race it was entered in. The media loved the car but for not only when it was winning but when on the odd occasion it didn't win this is thought to have bought in even more media attention!! So the Porsche 550 Spyder was a racing success and it made Porsche a really good name in the motor racing industry and even to this day Porsche are extremely competitive.
