1968 Porsche 912 SWB LHD For sale my 912. Recent replacement engine in March 2011, by last owner at a cost of £4,700 from a well known specialist. The ...> car drives well and the 5 speed dog leg gear box is smooth and precise. The clutch is well weighted with a recent new master cylinder. I have an excellent history file dating back to when the car came into the country from the USA in 1998 with receipts in excess of £15,000. Lots of ongoing work is well documented through the years. Current mileage of 91,200 I am the 4th owner since 98 and the car is obviously on historic tax and is MOT’d until June 2012. The cars last owner had a respray in 2007 but the car is in need of some cosmetics to bring it up to scratch. The car is solid but will need some paintwork, where there are some bubbles and blemishes on rear wing, cills, bonnet, front wing and one headlight surround. Some areas will need attention and a respray would be the long term way to go. Orginal colour was Irish green. Brightwork is all in good shape. The Fuches are in need of a refurb which would really set the car off against the poppy red paintwork. Interior is in good condition and has been re-trimmed in the past with new carpets, headlining, seats and door cards etc but its all very tidy and a pleasant place to be. Wood dash and classic Nardi steering wheel all complement each other well. Again, some TLC is required but its all easy stuff to take care of. There is no jack or wheel brace but the spare is also a Fuche with a good tyre. Tyres are ok but will soon need replacing. Drivers side window doesnt wind all the way up and the passenger quarterlight needs alignment to stop a bit of wind noise. The clock doesnt work but again probably an easy fix. New plugs, leads and gaskets just fittted too. I Also have the original engine (seized unit, unknown reason, had no time to examine cause.) which I was due to have work done on at a later date. All of the ancillaries such as carbs, dynamo, distributor, tinware etc have been used on the replacement engine. This engine will be sold with the car if the car is sold for the advertised price only. Current engines are hard to find and this unit may be a straightforward fix for the knowledgeable and can either be tuned up and put back in and sell the current engine. The car is a very driveable classic with cosmetic work required to bring it up to scratch ready for next summer ! I can email anyone interested with more pictures of the suspect areas. I have lowered the buy it now price from £14k to £13k. £250 deposit can be made thorugh paypal. Balance to be cleared funds or cash on collection X

912 History The Porsche 912 was built from 1965 - 1969 and was seen by many as a transitional model from the 356 to 911. It had all the modern developments of the 911 and the tried and trusted powerplant of a 356. The 912, powered by a flat four 1582cc 90bhp engine, was some 250 pounds lighter than a 911 and its handling characteristics were consequently improved. The 912 was a best seller and even outsold the 911 in 1966. Available as a Coupé or a Targa, the 912 was especially popular in the USA where many of today's Register Members cars originated. In fact, the 100,000 Porsche ever built was a 912 in the guise of a German Police car. A footnote to the 912 story is the 912E, which was an impact-bumper model manufactured in 1976. With it's 2 litre engine, it was the last air-cooled 4-cylinder car built by Porsche. Once the classic car magazines noticed this (remember the www was in it's infancy then) they proclaimed that a classic Porsche could be a daily driving option for £3000 or even less. As the 912 was rare in the UK, due to it's limited sales when new, the cars available were often from the USA. Lots of cars were imported and the Porsche fraternity started to notice what great car they were in their own right, they weren't just 'a poor man's Porsche'. With great handling and stunning looks they became the 'sleeper' that has now become a 'cult classic', with people up-rating their engines they are no slouch in the performance stakes now either, not that they ever really were. With the formation of the 912 Registry in the USA and the continued success of this website, we have seen the stature of the 912 increase beyond what any Porsche fan would have thought possible twenty years ago. The 912 really has become the 'Speedster' of the 911 model range ;) (well nearly). 912 Models Classic early 912 Coupé, the definitive 901 shape. 1965-68 Early 912 Soft-window Targa with zip out rear window, introduced in 1967. 912 Hard-window Targa, introduced mid 1968 as a more robust version, soft window version was still available. 912 Long Wheelbase car, introduced in 1968/69, rear wheels moved back 57mm, other changes included flared wheel arches. The 912E introduced in 1976 for one year only. 965 kg (2,130 lb) 1968 Porsche 912 Targa, used by the Dutch police The Porsche 912 is a sports car that was manufactured by Porsche of Germany between 1965 and 1969 as their entry-level model. The 912 is a nimble-handling compact performance four-seat vehicle, delivering 90 SAE horsepower at 5800 rpm.[2] It is capable of up to 30 miles per US gallon (7.8 L/100 km; 36 mpg-imp) fuel economy. This combination is possible because of a high-efficiency petrol engine, low weight, and low drag. A variant of the Type 911, one of the most famous and successful sports cars of all time, the Type 912 initially outsold the 911, boosting the manufacturer's total production until success of the 911 was assured. After the discontinuation of the 356 model in 1965, Porsche was left with the pricey new 911 as their only offering. Fearing that its considerable price increase over the 356 would cost the company sales and narrow the appeal of the brand, a decision was made by executives to introduce a new entry-level model. Built on the 911's chassis and sharing its bodyshell, Porsche was able to offer the 912 for much less than a base-model 911 by using the four-cylinder engine from the 356 rather than the 911's "flat" six-cylinder powerplant and by reducing the number of standard features. The proven reliability of the 356's engine combined with the 911 bodywork and low price made the 912 a very attractive buy to both new and old customers, and it substantially outsold the 911 during the first few years of production: Porsche produced slightly more than 30,000 units during its five-year production run. 912s were also used as police (polizei) cars in Europe, including Targas (Porsche's patented variation of a cabriolet with lift-off folding top, rollbar, and an openable plastic rear window). In April 1967, the Porsche factory's Christophorus magazine noted: "On 21 December, 1966, Porsche celebrated a particularly proud anniversary. The 100,000th Porsche, a 912 Targa outfitted for the police, was delivered."
After updating the 911 line-up to include both a more powerful 911S and a less expensive 911T, Porsche executives began to feel that the 912 had become redundant, that the 911 platform was sufficiently diverse and that pricing had largely come into line with market expectations. Owing to this and the desire to introduce a new model, the 912 was discontinued and superseded as Porsche's entry-level model by the 914 in 1970; a vehicle which Porsche had thought would be less expensive for them to manufacture and sell than the 912. In practice, a deterioration in relationships between Porsche and Volkswagen - who had designed and planned to manufacture the 914 - severely curtailed the intended cost reduction, and the 914 was discontinued in 1976.
After a six year absence, the 912 was re-introduced to North America in 1976 as the 912E to occupy the entry-level position left vacant by the discontinuation of the 914, while the new 924 – the 914's official replacement – was being finalized and put into production. The new 912 featured the "G-Series" 911 bodywork and was powered by a 2.0 L version of the Volkswagen air cooled engine, previously used in late-model versions of the 914/4. 2,099 were manufactured in total, and were not officially sold outside the United States.
[edit] Motorsport
Sold to the public for street use, the Porsche 912 was also raced, including rally events. Factory Rally Kits were available that included anti-roll bars, racing brake pads, and a dead pedal rest. In 1967 the 912 played a part in Porsche rally history when independent driver Sobiesław Zasada drove a 912 to win the European Rally Championship for series touring cars.

First registered in San Mateo California (so its the last of the 912's, long wheelbase model.) It's had an engine rebuild before coming to the UK HCP research sticker on it so I'm pretty sure its a Harry Pellow engine (but no documents to support this). I had a surface respray done fairly soon after I purchased the car as the paintwork was sound but very faded but the car was very solid. I have also had the underside sealed to protect it from UK roads as it was my daily driver for about a year. Interior is in very good condition. the usual cracked dash for a californian car and a previous owner has replaced the original radio with a CD player. The seats are Porsche but not original to the car. Imported into the UK by a dealer up near Nottingham (Fuchs) in 2001/2002 which is when I took possesion, kept garaged for all that time and only taken out in the dry when possible. I have the original service document which details its early history and I have recorded all the work done to the car since. I have the Porsche certificate and all the bill since I have ownd the car plus the original owner registration documents, owners manual and service book. A letter from Porsche regarding the manufacture date etc etc. This car was also featured on the cover of Classic and Sports Car Magazine (June 2006) This particular car is no longer listed for saleand we do not keep contact details.(e.g. sold, withdrawn, or awaiting approval)For a new search, click HERE Some History of the Porsche 912 PORSCHE 912 SPORTS COUPE With the advent of the long awaited new flat-six engined 911, originally previewed in 1963 as the 901 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, (Peugeot intervened in 1964 and caused the model to be re-badged without a zero in the model number) the designated '902' - to become the '912' - soon joined the model range, albeit briefly but nonetheless successfully, with the classic 911's structure and using the 90bhp 1,582cc flat-four ohv engine from the 356C. Using a five-speed gearbox to the 356's four, nearly 31,000 of these underated 912s were built between 1965 and 1968 with all-round disc brakes and a top speed of 120mph and a standing quarter mile of just 18.2 seconds. .
