Inspired by the Porsche 356 which was created by Ferry Porsche, and some spyder prototypes built and raced by Walter Glöckler starting in 1951, the factory decided to build a car designed for use in auto racing.[1] The model Porsche 550 Spyder was introduced at the 1953 Paris Auto Show.[2] The 550 was very low to the ground, in order to be efficient for racing. In fact, former German Formula One racer Hans Herrmann drove it under closed railroad crossing gates during the 1954 Mille Miglia.
The 550 / 1500RS or Spyder became known as the "Giant Killer". The later 1956 evolution version of the model, the 550A, which had a lighter and more rigid spaceframe chassis, gave Porsche its first overall win in a major sports car racing event, the 1956 Targa Florio.
Its successor from 1957 onwards, the Porsche 718, was even more successful, scoring points in Formula One as late as 1963. A descendant of the Porsche 550 is generally considered to be the Porsche Boxster S 550 Spyder; the Spyder name was effectively resurrected with the RS Spyder Le Mans Prototype.
The Porsche 550 "Little Bastard", serial number 550-0055 is best known for being the car in which James Dean was killed on September 30, 1955.[3]
[edit] Replicas Technic 550 Spyder, fibreglass panels on custom chassis. Powered by VW Beetle or Alfa engine. The 550 is among the most frequently reproduced classic automobiles, like the AC Cobra and Lotus Seven. Several companies have sprung up in the last 25 years, some of which build near-exact replicas from the ground up, including spaceframes built to exacting specs from Porsche blueprints. Some of the companies that make replicas are Boulder Speedster, Chuck Beck Motorsports, Chamonix do Brasil, Auto Classics, Thunder Ranch, Holmes Motor Company, Le Mans 550 Spyder, Vintage Spyders, and Alloycars, which specializes in exact aluminum re-creations from blueprints.

The bare facts? This Boxster Spyder is Porsche’s lightest and quickest current-gen roadster yet thanks to the folding roof being junked. The Spyder will be unveiled at the LA Auto Show in December 2009, and it’s not a run-out limited edition like previous Spyder-tagged Boxsters, but the third (and most expensive) permanent addition to the roadster range. So the new Porsche Boxster Spyder doesn’t have a convertible roof? Well it does. Sort of. To create the Spyder Porsche has binned the folding roof and all its associated mechanics, and in its place comes a bit of cloth that attaches to the windscreen and hooks onto the new rear deck. Even with the side windows up and the glass wind deflector in place, there’ll still be a few gaps letting the wind in. It’s only meant for low-speed driving – Porsche quotes the 166mph top speed without the roof. Shouting to be heard, we presume. And that new rear deck? It’s the most noticeable difference between the Spyder and a standard Boxster – there’s now a big pair of power domes behind the rear seats and a larger rear spoiler. Other tweaks include revised side intakes, a new front bumper and those retro stickers. What about inside, or under the (mid-engined) bonnet? The interior gets some fancy door pulls from the GT3 RS and weight-saving carbon buckets. Sports suspension, a lower centre of gravity and – at a relatively trim 1275kg – an 80kg weight advantage over a Boxster S should make the Spyder the sharpest Boxster yet. And with an extra 10bhp from the engine – taking the total from the 3.4-litre flat-six to 316bhp – and the Spyder is also two-tenths quicker to 62mph than a regular S, knocking the benchmark sprint out in 4.8 seconds. Normal Porsche options like PDK, sat-nav and ceramic brakes will be available, the stickers will be a delete option, and customers should also be able to swap the hardcore seats for more comfort-oriented items. UK sales start in February 2010 with prices set at £44,643, just a few grand more than a Boxster S. But it was British dealers, in an attempt to differentiate 944s from each other, and from the 968 range, who insisted on doing an "RS" by adding graphics to the lower sill on UK imported models to help boost interest and sales. Those graphics might well have been affixed by the German builders (I am not that much of an anorak to know) but if they did, they did it on the request of UK dealers. 13 November 2009 14:26 madcap says RE: Porsche Boxster Spyder (2010) first pictures SnarkKiller Martini Porsche? 911 2.7 RS? Maybe there are grounds for criticism but I can't think of any. Oh hang on, I don't like the '80s side graphics or the colour. 09 November 2009 11:15 SnarkKiller says RE: Porsche Boxster Spyder (2010) first pictures I still don't understand the venom chucked at Porsche every time they issue a variant of the 911 or Boxster. Could it be envy? Variants has been a policy every since the first 356. It's a good way of keeping clever engineers occupied and it tests the market place. How many variants of each Ford Fiesta has their been? How many of Vauxhall Corsa? There is a limited market for Porsche sports car, therefore the more they create category driven variations the more additional buyers step forward. Each advance in design benefits other Porsches and their owners. Why should I complain? It is Porsche's money not mine getting spent. 09 November 2009 09:57 ianbp says RE: Porsche Boxster Spyder (2010) first pictures Wow, another variant of a variant. Let me go into the corner and wee myself with excitement. A crappy plastic boot lid and some dubious panels and everyone's creaming themselves. Hats off the the guys in Stuttgart, they really know how to milk a design and take suckers money for what? A few more bhp that the chassis probably won't be able to handle, give it an old name and kappow - queues of suckers waiting to be parted with their money. Rather than being a stickers and stripes special edition, or an expensive limited-run like the 911 Sport Classic, the Spyder joins the Boxster range as a third model. And it features some clever weight saving tech that cleaves 80 kilos from the kerbweight – at 1275kg it’s the lightest car Porsche currently makes – while there’s also more power and Carrera GT-inspired looks. But Porsche calls this Boxster a Spyder because it’s lost the regular cars folding fabric roof, a roof than made it a great everyday car. Has the sacrifice to make the Spyder a sharper driver’s tool been worth it? Read our first drive of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder to find out. How has the weight been cut from the new Porsche Boxster Spyder? The aluminium doors save 15kg, the one-piece rear deck made from the same stuff cuts another 3kg, and carbon-backed bucket seats trim 12kg. The new ten-spoke wheels are the lightest set of 19-inch wheels that Porsche make, weighing less than ten kilos each, and the lower side windows also helps shed a few pounds. The lack of an electrically folding fabric roof also helps cut weight. The new ‘cap’ – as Porsche calls it – weighs less than 6kg, and the carbonfibre frame that supports it is 5kg. The roof clips onto the windscreen header rail, and two hooks fasten onto the rear deck, and when you close the new Carrera GT-style boot, it acts as a lever to pull the roof taught. Top speed is limited to 124mph with the roof in place, but lifted to 166mph without it. There’s also lower – and thus lighter – side windows, new front bumper with LED lights, black mesh inserts for the side intakes, a plastic wind deflector between the seats, a high-level third brake light, and a larger fixed rear spoiler. Inside the Spyder you won’t find a radio, air-con, cup holders or door pockets, though you can spec the sound system and the beverage holders back in at no extra cost. And you can choose the less extreme (i.e. heavier) sports seats if you want. Fabric door pulls, red seat belts, the lack of a cowl for the instrument clusters, plus the transmission tunnel in the same colour as the exterior, completes the makeover.>> Click 'Next' below to read more of our Porsche Boxster Spyder first drive Porsche Boxster Spyder (2010); Porsche Boxster Spyder static views; Porsche Speedster spy video; Performance Car of the Year 2009 Porsche Cayman S - time trial; Porsche 911 Turbo - Executive Vice President of research and development; Porsche 911 Sport Classic; Porsche 911 GT3 RS (2nd gen 997); Porsche 911 coupe (2010) ; Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet (2010); Porsche Panamera interior video; Porsche Panamera driving video; Porsche Boxster at the ring; Porsche 911 GT3 RS testing; Porsche 911 Cabriolet spy video; Porsche 991 coupe spy video; Porsche 991: the next 911 sports car caught in spy video ; Inside the Porsche musuem ; autos; cars; museum; Porsche; Porsche museum; Porsche 911 GT3 2nd gen video; 911; autos; cars; porsche 911; porsche GT3; Supercars; Porsche Cayman facelift ; Porsche Panamera 2009 5-door; New porsche 911 PDK video road test; 911; automotive; PDK; Porsche; porsche 911; Porsche video special: Derek Bell drives the Porsche 911 GT2 and 2.7 RS on track; 2.7; 2.7 RS; 911; bell; derek; Derek Bell; gt2; Porsche; Rockingham; rs; special; track; video; Porsche video special: 959, Carrera GT, 911 Turbo, GT2 ; 911; 959; auto; autos; behind; car; Carrera; Carrera GT; gt; gt2; gt3; gt3 rs; magazine; online; Porsche; rs; Scenes; Supercar; Supercars; the; turbo; www.carmagazine.co.uk; Porsche video special: Porsche Cayenne GTS vs Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder; 550 Spyder; 911; Boxster; Boxster RS60; cayenne; Cayenne GTS; GTS; North Wales; Porsche; RS60; Spyder; vs; wales; Nissan's new GT-R takes on Porsche's 911 Turbo around Rockingham; 911; audi; auto; bmw; CAR Magazine; CAR Online; godzilla; gt-r; GTR; m3; nissan; Porsche; R8; Skyline; turbo; Nissan's new GT-R takes on the Porsche 911 Turbo. I think it just needs a little trimming on the excess surfaces in order to contribute on better fuel efficiency as well. 4-Seasons A/C Evaporator is one light air condition part which could be a good pattern for air conditioning stuff. 20 January 2010 06:51 DrPep says RE: Porsche Boxster Spyder (2010) CAR review I must say i'm particularly pleased to see Porsche heading down the lightweight path of righteousness. Great as this is, I'll still be holding out for a 997 GT3 in a year or so. I see this doing very well indeed on the continent, less so in the UK where I imagine it'll be a sunday toy for a lucky few with garage space. Good work Porsche. Finally we have a high performance car that does not compromise practicality, reliability or efficiency. Porsche could have chopped 80kg by removing all interior trim, sound deadening pads, air-conditioning, radio, bumper, exhaust silencer, etc. But the car would not be useable on a daily basis. Since the demise of the NSX, there hasn't been another sports car that delivers such a combination of performance, efficiency, practicality, and quality. And at a lower price, coming from Porsche. If only I could get some of these specials parts for my Cayman without the need to rob a bank first. 25 December 2009 15:55 tuboludo says RE: Porsche Boxster Spyder (2010) CAR review "A 911 is the only sensible and true Porsche...Period." I must disagree 100% with this comment. The 911 wasn’t even the first production car from Porsche, so even if it has a great history and sure as hell is a fantastic car, it is not the only true Porsche. Do you think that the production cost of the 911 is higher than the production cost of the Boxster? Let me tell you, it is not! So the 911 drivers are paying a hell of a lot for that 911 sticker. And I am not a Billionaire and love the looks and the concept of the Boxster. So I will be going for one of those other sensible and true Porsches 17 December 2009 13:31 Show all comments Become a CAR contributor Upload stories, photos or videos direct to the site, or email newsdesk@carmagazine.co.uk.
